“Help A Child Smile” was created in 1987 from the need to bring some joy into the lives of children with cancer. The wish of a brave young child to go to Wonderland soon after it opened inspired family and friends, and Help A Child Smile was born.
Now in its third decade, HACS is serving over 1100 families whose child is being or has been treated for cancer at McMaster Children’s Hospital. There are an average of 150 children in active treatment at any given time.
The Board of Directors remains dedicated to providing opportunities for these children to smile and have fun, even if only for a couple of hours, a day, or a week.

An organization focused on children with cancer treated at the Children’s Hospital at Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation by providing opportunities for them and their families to smile and have fun.
2020 has been a challenging year for everyone. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have continued to support our HACS families with paid hospital parking for treatments, meal vouchers, gas cards, procedures not covered by OHIP and physically distanced safe events for families during the summer and fall.
As we embark on 2021, we are looking forward to a better situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. Our board has made a commitment to our families to continue providing the supports that we do — COVID-19 hasn’t stopped cancer diagnoses and treatment, but our ability to fundraise has been impacted and we want to be able to continue to provide everything we can to our families.
